Understanding the Seasons in South Africa’s Lowveld
When people ask me the best time to go on safari, I always say: “It depends on what you want to see.” Each season in South Africa has its own unique charm – and that’s part of what makes it so special. But to avoid disappointment, it’s a smart question to consider before you book your trip. Especially since South Africa is huge and has more than one climate zone.
I'll start by focusing on the best safari weather around Kruger National Park, nd later I’ll come back to the weather conditions in the Cape region.
The Lowveld is a low-lying, warm region in the northeast of South Africa, home to iconic safari destinations like Kruger National Park and the town of HoedspruitThanks to its mostly dry climate and open savannah landscapes, the Lowveld is ideal for game viewing and unforgettable safari experiences. The seasons in the Lowveld can generally be divided as follows:
Summer (December to February) – Green and Full of Life
Summer is warm, with the occasional hot day — so having air conditioning at our villa is definitely a plus. Tropical showers can roll in now and then, leaving everything lush and green in and around Kruger National Park. It’s the season of newborn animals, abundant birdlife, and breathtaking sunsets. Just keep in mind: with the dense vegetation, spotting wildlife can be a bit more challenging than during the drier months.

Even in our garden, we see big changes throughout the year. During this time, our garden is full of lush grass, which attracts the grazers. Every day, a warthog or nyala passes by as our live lawnmowers. Occasionally, the zebras lend a helping hand, but they are quite shy!
Autumn (March to May) – Mild Temperatures and Beautiful Light
The summer rains have passed, but the bush is still relatively green. During the day, it’s warm (around 27°C), and the evenings gradually become cooler. This is a calm transitional period, as nature shifts from vibrant greens to more earthy tones.
The animals are more visible as the vegetation becomes less dense. As the rains decrease, you’ll notice the beautiful autumn colors emerging within just a few days — but without the cold and rain.
Winter (June to August) – Dry and Perfect for Safaris
In winter, it hardly rains. The vegetation becomes dry, and water sources become scarce. The animals head towards the water – making it the perfect time to spot them. During the day, the weather is comfortably warm (22-27°C), but mornings and evenings can be quite chilly. June is the coldest month, so packing a sweater is a good idea. Keep in mind that the water in an unheated pool can be very cold, so look for accommodation, like our villa, with a heated pool.

During this time, we see many more animals appearing in our garden. Last year, we regularly spotted giraffes. And when it’s extremely dry, even the plants in our garden (which the kudu don’t usually like) aren’t safe anymore!
Spring (September to November) – New Life and Perfect Safari Weather
After the dry winter months, the bush slowly starts coming to life. Temperatures rise to a pleasant 28-30°C. You’ll see the first fresh leaves, flowers, and sometimes even newborn animals. How cute!

From our garden, we watch the building of bird nests and see every day how the mother and father birds work hard to help their chicks take flight. Once the little ones have flown off, it suddenly becomes quiet, and even I feel a bit of the "empty nest" syndrome.
The Best Time for a Safari
I hope the above gives you a good idea of what to expect during each season, so you can tailor your itinerary accordingly.
It’s important to note that also in South Africa the climate is becoming increasingly unpredictable. The weather doesn’t always follow the usual seasons, which means that rain, for example, may arrive later or earlier than usual.
My advice: There’s really never a “wrong time” to visit South Africa. Nature is constantly changing, and each season has its own unique atmosphere. I’ve experienced all the seasons at least once, but I don’t have a clear favorite. An believe me: waking up in Villa Tall Horse, with only the sounds of the bush around you, is an experience you’ll never forget, no matter the season.
And what about Cape Town?
Many guests want to combine a safari with a few days in Cape Town and the Garden Route. It’s understandable – both areas are beautiful and very different. But keep in mind, they also have very different climates!
Due to the climate differences, it’s not always ideal to combine both regions in one trip. Remember that the climate in Cape Town is the exact opposite of the Kruger region:
- In Cape Town regent het vooral in de winter (juni-augustus). De beste maanden voor een sunny city trip there are from October to April.
So, especially if you're going on safari in June-August, it's not recommended to combine the trip with a visit to Cape Town. Of course, it’s possible, but make sure to research what you can realistically expect.
Better idea: make it two beautiful trips. My advice? Choose one region per trip and take your time to really enjoy it. There's nothing worse than being at a beautiful spot, only to have to jump back in the car because your schedule says so. I love traveling, but I’m not a fan of rushing — and if you try to fit too much into too little time, you're missing out on the full experience.
Many tour operators pack everything into one route because travelers want to see all the famous highlights. But it’s when you slow down that you truly discover the real beauty of South Africa.
Instead, choose a few beautiful spots and take day trips from there. This way, you spend less time traveling, get to experience more, and… let’s be honest: it’s not a bad thing to come back again, right?
